Blake and Lillian Boudreaux

10-31-13

(Opening)

Good evening. We are gathered here together on this night to witness the uniting of Blake and Lillian. There is no night better suited to perform  this ceremony... because, like this night, these two people are unique and fascinating....  mysterious, and mystical. This is a magical evening, and  Blake and Lillian are thrilled that you can share in the wonder of it. Love is an enchanting and wondrous thing, and we are lucky to bear witness  to this joining of hearts, minds, and spirits.   I would like to begin with the reading of an original poem, written by me as a gift to the bride and

 groom:

                         You Save Me

       By Reverend Shannon Altmeyer

The blackest shadows may fall over me

And fear may begin to creep in,

 But you...  You save me.

All of the stars can rain down from the heavens and come crashing

    into the earth

And sometimes, when I stand so close to the edge

That I think that gravity might pull me

Down into the deepest depths of nothingness

I feel safe, because You.... You save me.

If the entire world was jolted by a

Monstrous earthquake, and every single building

Exploded into a million pieces and then burned to the ground,

And an enormous flood came and swept away

 the ruins,

And if the whole universe was shrouded in darkness, and light was no more....

 I would not be afraid

Because you, My Love, save me.

(Intent)

Blake and Lillian, you come here before me on this evening, and before your family and friends to be joined as one. Marriage is not to be entered

into without serious thought.  Keeping this in mind, I ask the two of you now: do you come into this union willingly and after serious

consideration?

(we do.)

My second reading comes from a sonnet by Pablo Neruda:

I do not love you as if you were salt-rose, or topaz,
or the arrow of carnations the fire shoots off.
I love you as certain dark things are to be loved,
in secret, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that never blooms
but carries in itself the light of hidden flowers;
thanks to your love a certain solid fragrance,
risen from the earth, lives darkly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where.
I love you straightforwardly, without complexities or pride;
so I love you because I know no other way than this:

where I does not exist, nor you,
so close that your hand on my chest is my hand,
so close that your eyes close as I fall asleep.

(Sand Ceremony)

Before you, there are two containers of sand.  One representing each of your lives before today.  As you pour the sand into the large container,  the individual grains will be combined in such a way that that will be forever changed. Much in the same way, you are coming together here,  being joined in such a way that YOU will be forever changed, and in such a way that nothing and noone will be able to separate you.

(Handfasting)

Blake and Lillian, please face one another other and take each other’s hands. Your hands are an often not-so-much noticed part of yourself, but are actually very important, both to you and to each other.  ALWAYS REMEMBER:

These are the hands of your best friend, full of love for you, holding yours on your wedding day. These are the hands that will scratch your back when you have an itch you can’t reach.

These are the hands that will help decorate your Christmas tree .

These are the hands that will dial your number just to say hello â€“ when you’ve been missed throughout the day.

These are the hands that, at times, will want to strangle you.

These are the hands that will passionately love and cherish you through the years.

These are the hands that will hold you for comfort

These are the hands that will wipe the tears from your eyes.

These are the hands that will tenderly hold your children.

These are the hands that even when wrinkled and aged will still be reaching for yours, still giving you the same unspoken tenderness with just a  touch.

Now, keeping in mind how important your hands are, I ask these questions of you as I bind the two of you together with this ribbon.

Will you promise to always put each other first in all ways? (we do.)

Will you promise to keep yourselves for each other only? (we do.)

Will you promise to always be the reason for only happy tears, and to not cause intentional pain to each other? (we do)

Will you promise to bring out the best in each other by giving the best of yourselves always?  (we do.)

And it is by these promises that you are now bound.  Any time fear or doubt will creep into your lives, which it sometimes will, look upon this  ribbon which is binding you today, and remember your love and how you feel at this exact moment.  Focus on this love to see you through the  hard times, and never give up on each other.

(Vows)

Blake and Lillian have prepared their own vows to each other to seal this covenant between them.

(Read vows)

(Signing of the papers)

As you have been bound spiritually, now we will sign the papers that will legally bind you to one another.

(Ring Vows)

May I have the rings, please?

Rings are a symbol of unending strength and love, made of precious metals which also symbolizes how precious you are to one another. They are a physical symbol of an eternal promise.

Blake, place the ring on Lillian's finger and repeat after me:

Lillian, I give you this ring /

As a sign of my devotion /

And as long as there is breath in me /

  Happiness will live in you.

Lillian, place the ring on Blake's finger and repeat after me:

Blake, I give you this ring /

As a sign of my devotion /

And as long as there is breath in me /

  Happiness will live in you.

Blake and Lillian, you have made promises to one another here tonight by proclaiming your vows and by the giving and receiving of rings. And now, by the powers vested in me, by the state of Louisiana, it is my honor to pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride!

I am proud to present to you for the first time ever in public, Mr. And Mrs. Blake Boudreaux :-)
